Honestly I’ve always wondered how Asuna usually deals with her everyday life.. she was basically almost raped after being trapped in a video game for so long ? I’m always baffled by that..

All of her confidence and depression issues after returning from the game are manifestations of her PTSD. Unlike Kirito she never kills anyone, but there are still pretty profound effects.

In the game she was powerful, respected and had control of her own life and relationships. Once the game ended, she was kidnapped, assaulted, threatened with rape and memory loss. And then her family is only concerned with the time she lost and not what had happened to her. She feels like she’s completely weak and helpless outside of Aincrad, and no longer able to make decisions for herself.

Her experiences with the Sleeping Knights change that. And while she still clearly bears the scars from her trauma like everyone else in this series she’s much closer to the confident front line clearer Asuna going into Alicization than she has at any point since leaving Aincrad.
