I’m geniunely curious, what do the actual fans of Sword Art Online think of SAO abridged?
I watched the first few episodes and didn’t really think the quality was all that great. Maybe it got better, I don’t know. I do know that I feel one of the most important elements of making an abridged series is being a fan of the source material, which really doesn’t seem to be the case.
Not having at least a tertiary knowledge of the material you’re parodying leads to memes like Kayaba not knowing why he created Aincrad being treated as fact instead of lampooning the fact that so many people think so etc.
Generally I’m apt to dislike it because it’s created a legion of people that think it’s a better story and characters than Sword art online itself, but who haven’t read word one of the novels.

I’m eternally mad sao is bad as it is, like, “mmorpg where if you die you die irl” is such a great plot synopsis????? and yet ?????? they had to otaku bait ?????? like we have a great plot what’s everything we can possibly do to fuck it up???? and I know that everything that is gonna have that plot in the future is gonna be labelled as a sao rip off no matter how good it is
What’s funny is that’s not even the real premise of the series. No wonder people have such a hard time with it. Not that the anime’s constant otaku pandering helps.
Anyway it’s been so long that the progressive reboot series has more material printed than the original anime was adapted from at this point. Most people that loved the idea of Aincrad don’t even seem to know it exists.
