The End of the World (Episode 14 – Sword Art Online)
The conclusion to the Aincrad arc got nominated for two reasons. The first reason is Kayaba’s reason… He decided to trap ten thousand people, risk their lives in a death game, all because he wanted to build a flying castle. That is something to do in Minecraft, not with people’s lives. The second reason is cheat-mode Kirito. He shouldn’t have survived, but he used the almighty power of MAIN CHARACTER to cheat his way out of the game. Likewise, Asuna died. Her brain should have fried, but instead she was miraculously saved.

Kayaba was trying to create an entirely new world. That’s the reason for trapping the people inside the game and making them look like themselves. The entire premise of the series is showing what happens when people have to treat virtual reality as reality. Though this is understandable because it’s not outright stated in the anime. By the time the game is cleared only 300 people are even trying to leave, the rest are just living lives in the game.

However, Kirito and Asuna being alive because Kayaba kept them alive to talk to them one last time is directly stated in the anime. The reasoning being because they both surpassed the laws of the game system. How they are able to do so is an ongoing mystery in the series as a whole which is eventually answered. If you’ve watched SAO, sister series Accel world the concept of changing the game world by sheer force of will might be familiar.
