ALO used the AmuSphere, so I figure it’d still use a neural scan, actually? And Aincrad used a head scan to calculate what your face looks like, and it only uses a touch-based body calibration to know your height and body type.
I don’t think we actually learn what the NerveGear uses to figure out your gender in any completely canonical sources, but even the infamous Chapter 16.5 mentions the gender lock was a thing implemented due to the feeling of gender dysphoria players would come to feel, so I don’t see why it would be far-fetched to assume it uses a similar scan system, especially considering the NerveGear is actually more powerful than the AmuSphere.
I am pretty neutral on this headcanon, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with disagreeing with it, but I just personally fail to see how it would be deemed impossible to be true! I think we’d need to know more about oddly specific things about the NerveGear to make that judgement. I guess that even if it was openly disconfirmed by canon, it’s still not something that changes the story much or anything, so I don’t see anything wrong with it either way.
