I honestly think it’s funny how heavily Kawahara reinforces that Kirito and Sachi’s relationship is not supposed to be romantic in 002.
It’s almost like you can hear him screaming “They are not in love!” while hitting the reader on the head with a broom.
That’s because in the web novel period pretty much every girl including sachi was in love with kirito. Since that’s a lot more understated or flat out different in the light novels, the changes do seem hamfisted.
It wasn’t until volume six that the novels really started becoming full rewrites.
