Ok but when I first read this I thought it was just some sad thing Kawahara made up for no reason other than to explain Tonky’s name but…this is a real Japanese children’s book….based on an actual elephant named Tonky who lived at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo during WWII. Like, not only is this super sad story a book but it ACTUALLY HAPPENED. I actually found the whole book online (it’s short because children’s book) and it was really sad….
