SAO has a lot of problems but tbh my biggest problem is that only like ….. 6-7 thousand people were living in game for a majority of Aincrad. That’s how many people are online on my FF XIV server when it’s considered dead O_o

MMORPGs were a lot different in 2001 when the series was written. Pre Ragnarok Online, Pre World of Warcraft. 10,000 subscribers at launch would have been a roaring success. Ultima Online, the game SAO is based on was the first game that could handle more than a hundred or so simultaneous users, and it’s servers couldn’t even handle 100,000 in it’s first year.

The series is a look 20 years into the future of gaming. It’s understandable Kawahara didn’t envision games with a million active users, or people actually willing watching other people play games. Hell the fact that he got widespread wifi use is pretty amazing.

bruh i wasnt expecting a legit answer hot damn

and in this context it makes sense

but still how did anything get done

For one the game was designed with a lot fewer users in mind, but it did take them a long time to get anything done. It took them 2 years to get 3/4′s of the way through.

Only 300 people were actively trying to clear the game for most of what’s covered in the anime. And you had crazy shit where people were spending 16+ hours a day grinding, and it still took them that long.
