I am not sure if I like the female characters in SAO. I mean, they are strong, funny, smart etc. but at the same time, I do not need that angle off their butts. Many of them are portrayed as Louis-Lanes. What about Kirito having to duel in order for Asuna to be allowed to leave her guild? He doesn’t own her. She should be allowed to leave on her own accord?
The anime director in the first two seasons adds a ridiculous amount of fanservice to a series that really doesn’t have a lot. It also removes a ton of their character motivations and development in a rush for time. The anime is frankly a mediocre adaptation. it’s a shame because the series has some really great female characters but they’re reduced to fanservice and whether or not they like kirito with the barest of backstory or motivations otherwise.
As for the last, the duel was never about Asuna, it was always about Kirito. They’re literally dueling over him being in the guild, not Asuna.
Even in Aincrad where the only real form of governing bodies they have are the guilds she was free to leave whenever she wanted to, and in fact does so after this episode. It’s not a good look but she has full autonomy to do so when she wishes. Heathcliff just goaded Kirito in a way that he knew Kirito would accept. Asuna is rightfully angry he agreed without hesitation. Unlike against Kuradeel when he gets confirmation from her before accepting a duel on her behalf.
