So, wait a second… The VRMMO “ALfheim Online” was launched, and was trusted enough to be successful, while people were still in comas from the last VRMMO that came out?! The one that also had killed at least 2,000 people at this point.
What sort of PR campaign did they pull off to sweep those concerns under the fucking rug?Sword art online didn’t kill a single player, the Nervegear did. And the nervegear was immediately banned and replaced with the system you’re shown Suguha using throughout this arc.
The Amusphere prevents both the blocking of all external stimuli and lacks any type of power supply capable of killing a person. It’s no longer possible for any of the deaths in SAO to happen. Like pretty much all other technology that’s dangerous it was just reworked to be safer with the promise that such a thing can never happen again. Technology never goes back in the box even when it kills people.
At the point in time when ALO was launched they still didn’t have information on what was happening in the virtual world. All people knew about the NervGear was
-It was created by the same person who created SAO, and SAO was the only game out for it at the time.
-Everyone who put on the NervGear to play SAO never woke up, and within a single month 2,000 of them were dead.
-The rest of the people were still in hospitals. It had been at least a year since they went into the comas and still didn’t wake up.
So a new company comes out, releases the same thing but says “we promise this one won’t trap/kill you”… and enough people felt safe enough that they were able to sustain not only ALO but, as the end of the Fairy Dance arc says, at least 5 other VRMMOs.
They didn’t even wait until the people woke up and revealed it was a deliberate act on the part of the game creator. This would be like people climbing into zeppelins while the Hindenburg was still falling to the ground.
While SAO was the first VRMMO for the technology it was not the first game for the system. People had been using the product for six months without incident before SAO went live. There are almost 200,000 devices in use in Japan by the time of the SAO launch.
People on the outside world know exactly why people were trapped in SAO and how they were dying. Kyaba literally held a press conference during the launch. This is revealed in the very first episode of the anime.
A new company comes out and releases a completely different hardware device with all kinds of safety features and changes that make it impossible to either trap or kill. There’s still a demand for Full dive virtual reality. This is the kind of thing that happens with technology all the time in real life.
To use your analogy more correctly, this is like people abandoning the zeppelin for the airplane after the Hindenburg crash.
