I have a lot of debunking to do!
Spoilers ahead
Asuna’s Rapier - Her rapier was left behind when she died because she and Kirito shared an inventory, due to their marriage. All of her items became Kirito’s when she died. It remained out of storage because a vacancy had just opened in Kirito’s weapon equip slots due to Dark Repulsor shattering.
ALO Dual-Wielding - Actually, no sword skills exist in ALO pre-Aincrad. Swordplay in ALO is achieved basically the same way as it is IRL - swing the pointy thingy and hit the enemy. Swinging two pointy thingies isn’t a problem because, as sword skills don’t exist in the first place, a sword skill is not mucked up when two swords are used as it would have been in Aincrad. This is different after New Aincrad - as explained by Kirito in the anime.Weapons become physical objects when equipped, and can be dropped or lost. They don’t vanish back into inventory. It’s the same in alfheim when kirito picks up Leafa’s sword several times or when he grabs Musketeer X’s sniper rifle in gun gale.
The only iffy thing there is whether he’d actually be able to equip it sword skills or no because he didn’t have a rapier proficiency.
I think in the end the Rapier proficiency falls down to the rapier sword skills and stats. Seeing as Kirito didn’t use ANY sword skills when he swung Lambent light(he thrusted it once), I think he’s fine. Kirito likely wouldn’t have been able to use any of the Rapier skills, it’d be impressive if he could pull off a simple <<Linear>>.
Sword skills would have been impossible for the same reason dual wielding doesn’t work for anyone else. It’d be an “irregular equip” and thrown out by the system. There is enough gray area in how the world-as-reality works and the actual game mechanics that using the rapier was never an issue to me.
The symbolic nature of kirito using Asuna’s rapier to kill him far outweighs a slight inconsistency with the mechanics.
