The best villains think they’re the hero of the story, and if not for one tragic flaw used to justify their actions, they very well might be. By the end of Sword Art Online Part 1, you’re ready to hate Dr Kayaba, and then you get stopped dead by the revelation that his personal justification is “childhood dreams.” He’s grasping for the lost romanticism and imagination that growing older robs everyone of, trying to discover what was truly at the top of that Castle in the Sky. He is Aincrad’s actual and his own personal Last Boss, and ten thousand people suffered for it and I still can’t hate the guy.
