I wonder if anyone charged the red players with murder after SAO ended.
Like, they committed crimes and people actually died. I’m sure medical records can confirm times of death and dates in the real world, and a computer somewhere must have saved all of what went on inside the game. Just because the players never saw the body actually die when they killed someone doesn’t make it any less of a crime.
I heacanon that after the events of SAO, Asuna and Kirito and the others started tracking these people down and making their crimes aware to the government. They told their stories about the red guilds and the thieves and liars; they described the corrupt politics in the game and the terrible decisions made by those with power. They are brutal and honest in relating these stories and the families and loved ones of those who lost loved ones in-game finally get understanding and closure as those people, the orange and red ones and even those who kept their cursors clean by relying on others, are tried for their crimes. It’s a serious legal battle, with those who opposed arguing that it was a virtual reality and that what happened in-game doesn’t count, while the supporters and those who lived in the game argued that just because it was virtual, it wasn’t any less real. But finally people are tried for their crimes and those who died in-game are finally given the justice they deserved.
Well this was actually answered in the series itself. Because there was no real way to prove that killing people killed them for real, and the fact that many of the players were underage at the time, no criminal charges were filed against the players. The entire criminal blame was laid at Kayaba Akihiko’s feet.
Counseling was given to the red players they knew of, and the School exists to keep an eye on the players as well.
