From @djmidli:

I find point one, about the light novels being more in depth interesting. I’ve only read the first two SAO light novels but so far I find them to be lacking information vs what was presented in the Anime series. Is there a divergence at some point between the books at TV anime?

Unfortunately, I’ve only read Vol. 1 of the light novel, and I’m halfway through Vol. 2. I think that some other fans would have a better response to this than me.

However, I do know one significant point of divergence in Aincrad is Kayaba telling them about the 2 hour time limit for being unplugged so that they can be moved to hospitals during the events of the first episode, which was only sort of touched on in Episode 13 of season 1, and that there’s much more explanation on the mechanics of the game.

Sorry I can’t help that much in naming off some of the differences. ):

There’s quite a divergence, as episode two is from sao: progressive, and episodes five and six are from volume 8. Aside from that I still don’t see how one can find the novels lacking compared to the anime. There’s just so much more information and world building compared to the anime.
