Details about the upcoming SAO movie have been released in Dengeki Bunko Magazine issue #46. After speaking to a translator with access to scans of the magazine, these details have been confirmed to be in this issue.
According to an interview with the author of SAO, planning for the movie began just before the end of season 2’s airing in Japan. The movie is said to focus on Kirito and Asuna in the time between Mother’s Rosario and Alicization, but will also contain scenes involving the other characters.
There was talk of making the movie into another reboot of the Aincrad arc beginning from floor 1, but this idea was replaced with a continuation of the story after the Mother’s Rosario arc.
No release date has been given at this time.
